• Diamond & Pearl Ball: October 2006- Beckstrand Cancer Foundation’s annual Diamond and Pearl Ball, held at the Balboa Bay Club & Resort on Saturday, October 21, 2006, celebrated the golden age of Hollywood and raised money to improve and enhance the quality of life of cancer patients and their families. The sold-out black tie affair drew 475 guests and honored the life of Andi Collins who lost her battle to Inflammatory Breast Cancer at age 16. Lauren Collins, Andi’s sister, spoke about the establishment of Four Pearls, an auxiliary of Beckstrand Cancer Foundation, with Veronica and Stephanie Muth. A Fund-A-Need auction was held immediately following the speech that raised $487,000 toward the development of a Beckstrand pediatric oncology program. The event brought in a record $1 million net proceeds.
• Talulah G Holiday Shopping Event: November 2006- The Talulah G Holiday Shopping Event was Four Pearls introduction to the Orange County community. The staff at Talulah G crafted a unique holiday shopping experience and offered a percentage of the sales to Four Pearls. Local fashion designers from Tyler Rose Swimwear, Hayluv Jewelry, and Lauren Merkin Handbags displayed their collections and also attended the event. The festive atmosphere in the boutique, the famous Fashion Island Christmas tree standing just outside, along with custom blended Four Pearl-tinis provided by Absolut Vodka, treats from Sprinkles Cupcakes and a DJ made the evening sparkle!
• BELIEVE 2006:Laura Dubrish recounts her experience: “Out of every event that I have participated in since becoming a member of Four Pearls, BELIEVE is the most rewarding & priceless experience with patients and their families. The impact Four Pearls makes in the lives of these families is huge. The Christmas giving experience is unforgettable, not just to the patients, but to everyone that was able to participate in the BELIEVE program.
Each patient we visited dealt with their illness in a different way--some were depressed and weak, others were optimistic and strong. The most memorable was Moncerrat “Monce” Bravo, who was one of those remarkable children who were able to mask their emotional and physical pain.
Monce was a young lady, because although she was just 11 years old, the manner in which she carried herself was very mature for her tender age. We were received by her mother, father and younger brother with a very warm, cheerful welcome. You could see the excitement in, not just Monce’s eyes, but in each of the family member’s faces. Our presence alone, without any gifts, I am sure, would have been fulfilling enough for the Bravos. We came bearing large bags filled with all the gifts on their “wish lists.” We sat in the tiny living room inside their 3 bedroom apartment and, through English-to Spanish translation done by Monce, the family decided that each person could open just one gift during our visit. Family tradition was that no gifts be opened prior to Christmas Day. We ended up spending 2.5 hours with the family, and created a bond that we will forever have with the Bravo family. Monce was touch by an Angel in September, but her spirit and and infinite “presence” lives on in the Four Pearls community.
What I took away from this experience is that the smallest of gestures-not gifts-are what these children and families value most. Personally, I found this to be a very grounding experience, and the perfect beginning to another joyous Christmas Season.”
